Copywriting is all about the feels. It’s about evoking memories. Creating emotional responses. And getting people right there. Just ask Virgin Care – we’ve been busy creating a whole new employer brand for them that does just that.
The way they work is designed to help their people feel inspired. Or feel confident. Or feel cared for. And any one of a thou
sand other emotions that drive them to deliver the kind of care that really makes a difference.
The bottom line is that their copy is designed to describe a working environment where anyone can feel good about their career – and you can check some of it out at http://careers.virgincare.co.uk
We caught up with Garry, Head of People at Virgin Care to find out how he feels about his career – and here’s what he told us.
How did you get into the industry?
I studied HR at university, when I graduated I decided not to go in to the industry straight away and started to work for Thomas Cook as a holiday rep in the Balearic islands. I worked for Thomas Cook for 6 years, working my way up to resort manager. My final role with them was within recruitment, travelling the UK recruiting holiday reps for the company. I always knew I would return and work within HR eventually, so I hung up the clipboard and the rest is history!
What’s the best piece of advice you’ve received in your career?
Know your strengths and believe in them. Basically, don’t sweat about the things which you aren’t amazing at, know your strengths and work with them.
What advice would you give to someone starting out in the HR sector?
Have a plan, and always plan your moves. Always be able to justify any career move you make, think about how you’ll justify any move during your next job interview and always have your end goal in sight.
What’s the best thing about working with Chatter?
The Dog stories – hahaha!
Seriously, its just been so easy to work with Chatter, whether its just the day to day or brainstorming and even having challenging conversations, its all just easy. Our two brands align well, we have a true partnership where we have open communication. It almost doesn’t feel like a traditional client, agency relationship but the perfect kind of relationship where we are on a journey together supporting one another. From that we’ve developed the employer brand and a great suite of materials which feel authentic and we can be proud of and which will help us to fill roles at Virgin Care…I’m excited to see how the Chatter/Virgin Care journey goes!
What are you reading, watching and listening to at the moment?
Reading: I’m reading a lot about HR systems at the moment for a system redesign project I’m leading. So lots about data interfacing and process efficiencies. Outside of that I do a lot of my reading across social media channels.
Watching: Derry girls – it’s so funny. I don’t re-watch many things but I’ve spent a lot of time flying recently and will have seen every episode four times, it’s a really good watch especially when I just need to laugh! McMafia is also good for those long journeys.
Listening: Kylie! I’m totally obsessed, I’ve just bought tickets for three different shows for her upcoming arena tour.
What’s your guilty pleasure?
Kylie!
Three words to describe yourself?
Personable, fun, focused.
What fact would surprise people about you?
I ran the Dublin marathon in sub 4 hours. Don’t feel the need to do it again but I set myself a goal and achieved it!
